FAQs
What is a septic system?
A septic system is designed to responsibly treat and return wastewater to the environment, particularly in areas without access to a municipal sewer system. It consists of two main components: the septic tank, which holds and treats the wastewater, and the dispersal field, where treated water is reintroduced to the soil.
Can septic tanks be repaired?
Yes, septic tanks can be repaired, but costs will vary based on the specific components that need attention. For instance, replacing a tank lid is generally less expensive than replacing the drain or leach field, which can be significantly more costly.
What access do you need to my septic tank during pumping?
If you know the location of your septic tank lids, please let us know and, if possible, expose them for easier access. If the tank’s location is uncertain, we’ll assist you in locating it and keep that information on file for future visits.
How often should my septic tank be pumped?
Your septic tank should be pumped every 3 years, or when the sludge levels approach one-third of the tank’s capacity. If sludge builds up beyond this level, it can lead to solids entering your leach field, resulting in premature septic system failure.
What causes septic system failure?
Most early septic system failures stem from poor design or inadequate maintenance. Failing to pump your septic tank every 3 years can result in solids clogging the drain field. Other factors that can lead to premature failure include improper disposal of chemicals, paints, antibacterial soaps, medications, and bleach, as well as excessive water usage and leaking fixtures.
How long can I expect my new septic system to last?
With proper maintenance, a septic system designed and installed by Geo-Sanitation can last 40 years or more.
